Originally from South America and part of the Camelid family there are two types of alpaca – Huacaya & Suri.
I am lucky enough to own both types as they provide me with very different fibre. Huacaya are fluffy from head to toe and Suri have long silky dreadlocks.
There are 22 natural shades of colour from white to deepest black. Each year after shearing I sort through the fibre and it is either sent away to be spun into yarn or I hand spin the best clip myself. The resulting yarn can then be hand woven or hand knitted.
